A lot of people are not always aware that their identity was stolen until after everything is way too late. Very recently, my friend discovered that his identity was stolen and was used for a variety of fraudulent transactions. For some unknown reason my friend, another individual was able to access their Medicare and used for fraudulent claims. When my friend checked his credit report, he further realized that the offender has opened a new bank account under his name, but these accounts were already closed. For all that does is open an account, we were not sure. My friend speculated that the bank account was probably used for a big fraud operation and when the crime was recorded, the account was immediately closed out.
for a loan from the appropriate authorities, except the statement that my friend had to make for himself, he was not influenced by the crime in anyway (or at least, not at the exact moment that he writes). We have tried to speculate on how this could have happened and that's what we came up with:
My friend is a prominent figure in the academic world and his resume is posted on the site within their university's website. Since the document is talking about, basically, that my friend was his credentials, apparently containing his full name and birthday. Using these two pieces of information, anyone can look at my friend address and telephone number using the phone book. After that, they can call Medicare and state that he (my friend is a difficult question) is in the hospital and they forgot the card at home. Because the hospital will require that Medicare information be provided before any checks can be held, Medicare would provide it and that's basically it. Everything is history.
This May sound unbelievable, but me and my friend came to two conclusions:
1 Anyone who posts a kind of personal information online is vulnerable to identity theft.
My friend's personal information posted online, so that is something that is out there for all to see. It should not have happened that he was more careful with their personal information. However, the majority of Internet users post their personal information with much ignore what such an act can do for their privacy. Social networking sites are just some of the sites where people often post their full name, place and birthdays, which immediately makes the social networking sites a gold mine for identity thieves.
2 Various organizations such as Medicare, should provide some kind of security or a password for people who want to access their personal information over the phone. It's more than recommended. It is easy to access another person's personal information, as previously shown in this article. It would be unwise, indeed, if the organization does not immediately give any personal information about its customers unless they are able to verify the identity of the person calling.
